What it adds to the source
The city’s dataset is the authority and this is derived from it. What is here that is not there: addresses normalised into a single field, a stable URL for every filing, borough and neighbourhood joins, a classification of every job into three work types, and the five-stage reduction of the city’s several dozen status strings. Rows that could not be placed on a map, or that carry a scale figure outside plausible bounds, are not in this file — they are not on the site either.

latitude, longitude | As published. Every row has both; that is a condition of being here. |
work_type | new building, alteration or demolition. |
status | The exact status string the city publishes. |
status_stage | That status reduced to one of five stages: filed, under review, approved, completed, closed. |
filed_on | When the application reached the city. |
approved_on | When an examiner approved it, where it has been. |
permitted_on | When the first permit was issued, where one has been. |
signed_off_on | When the work was recorded as finished, where it has been. |
status_changed_on | When the current status was set. |
applicant_business | The practice named as applicant of record. Person names are not included. |
What is deliberately missing
Individual owner and applicant person names are published by the source and are not carried here or anywhere on this site. The applicant business is, because a business named on a public filing is not a private individual.
The catalog is a rolling window over the city’s recent records rather than a complete history, so this is not an archive of every filing ever made. It is what the site publishes, which is the same thing every page and every figure here is built from.
Using it
Do what you like with it. The underlying records belong to the City of New York and should be attributed to NYC Department of Buildings. Where you use a figure this site derived — a median, a count across the catalog — a link to the page it came from lets your reader see the sample size behind it, which is the only thing asked in return.
